Several Different Goals with the Intra-Squad

With a few exceptions, the starting spots are set and Hokie-lifer is correct that the intra-squad is one last dry run for the starters before the first real matches of the year. For the second and third string guys and especially incoming freshman, the intra-squad offers them a glimpse of how hard D1 wrestling is when the veterans have something to prove. The intra-squad also helps the coaches decide who the best #2 options are at each weight in case they need to go with an injury replacement at any point during the season or just want to rest a starter at any point.

I think that the real action in terms of starting spots is going to be in the 157 and 165 space, where a number of wrestlers have shots, and maybe at 133 and 141. At 157/165, there could be 5-6 guys seriously competing. I personally think those starting spots will come down to Blees, Mastriani or LaPrade, with Bergida and Ciavarro trying to break in too. There’s also a lot of new talent in the 125/133 range, and the coaches will be deciding if any true freshman takes the 133 slot – if Gus moves to 141 – and with Joey staying at 125.
